The New York Jets have nothing to play for, after being eliminated from playoff contention last week, except for their own pride.
They almost managed to save a little respect this season, but they gave up the win with five seconds left on the clock, to lose another game and remain the only winless team this season.
Sam Darnold had another bad game, throwing for 186 yards on 14/23, with two touchdowns and an interception, also fumbling the ball twice. Ty Johnson managed to get 104 yards on the ground, with a touchdown.
David Carr threw for 381 yards with one interception and three touchdowns, none more important than his last throw.
With 5 seconds left on the clock, Carr threw a bomb to Henry Ruggs III, and the result? A 46 yard touchdown to seal the game for the Los Angeles Raiders, 31-28, and keeping the Jets’ season winless.
“Once I looked back, it felt like the ball was in the air forever, like it couldn’t come down,” Ruggs said. “I just had to find it and make the play.”
The Jets now have to try and get a win somewhere else, not before losing their Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams, getting fired this morning after a controversial blitz call on that last play of the game that left rookie cornerback Lamar Jackson in man-to-man coverage against Ruggs.
Team captain and safety for the Jets, Marcus Maye, openly questioned the call after the game. “I just felt like we could’ve been in a better call in that situation,” Maye said.
